Things To Do In Sarasota
Crowley Museum & Nature Center Walk leisurely through the nature preserve and pioneer history area, enjoying the sights and sounds of native Florida. The Pioneer area at CMNC consists of a museum of pioneer history, pioneer cabin, blacksmith shop, working sugar cane mill and, one of our major achievements, the restored Tatum House.
The self-guided nature trail winds through CMNC property from high and dry pine flatwoods, through the shady oak hammock, over the Maple Branch swamp, and out to the edge of the expansive Tatum Sawgrass Marsh along the Myakka River. The wide trails offer easy and pleasant walking conditions that are enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Visitors are provided with a booklet for the self-guided trail that details much of the native flora and fauna that might be seen.
Downtown Sarasota Farmer’s Market The Market has been a downtown mainstay for more than 28 years. The year-round, Saturday morning market is a potpourri of fresh produce, food, flowers and plants, fine artisanship, friends and fun. It has become a community happening - a gathering place for people to bring families, friends and even dogs to peruse the displays of garden-fresh produce and unique craft products. This is the place to see and be seen. This is the gathering place for current and former elected officials that hold “court” outside Pastry Art during the market. Who’s who of Sarasota go by the table to drop in for advice or to run ideas up the flagpole.
The Aquarium features the extraordinary sea life found off Florida's coast and showcases Mote Marine Laboratory's marine world renowned science research. There's fun for the whole family here. There are several exhibits including a shark tank, a touch tank, and a manatee exhibit.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota has been named one of the Top Ten Botanical Gardens in America by Country Living Gardener Magazine. Selby Gardens’ have world renowned orchid and bromeliad collections, as well as its butterfly, banyan, bamboo and other display gardens. More than 20,000 plants are represented in the seven greenhouses, with thousands more in the surrounding outdoor area.
The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art includes 21 galleries of internationally recognized European and American art with paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Poussin and other baroque masters. In addition, the estate encompasses Cà d'Zan, the recently restored 32-room Ringling mansion; the Circus Museum; the Original Asolo Theater; the Rose Garden and beautifully landscaped grounds overlooking Sarasota Bay.
Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall A purple, seashell-shaped building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, this unique performing arts hall presents Broadway musicals, national and international performers, world renowned symphony orchestras and classical, modern and ethnic dance.
Historic Spanish Point is more than a beautiful walk through a lush Florida forest. It is a walk filled with Evidence of Prehistoric Life and showcases the Lives of early Pioneer Homesteaders.
The Sarasota Film Festival has an annual celebration of film each January that is dedicated to exploring the best new stars of Independent film. Peter Belsito said “…is a busy, well organized, public festival with terrific support from one of the Southeast’s great genteel beach communities, and hands-down has the best festival parties since Cannes.”
The Asolo Theatre Company produces and presents high quality professional theatre for Sarasota. The Asolo performs primarily in rotating repertory with a resident company.
The Sarasota Opera’s outstanding productions are presented in the acoustically perfect opera house contains only l,000 seats.
Florida West Coast Symphony is a unique, multi-faceted organization, which embraces a dual commitment to both performance and education within the highest standards of symphonic and chamber music.
Florida Studio Theatre produces world premieres and contemporary works which have been produced on or off-Broadway within the last five years.
The Sarasota Ballet of Florida has achieved a dynamic standing among the arts organizations in the culturally rich Sarasota area. The Ballet has the unique distinction of being voted Sarasota’s Best Performing Arts Group for eight consecutive years.
The Flying Fish Fleet offers three large vessels for fishing trips into the Gulf of Mexico. The Flying Fish and the Flying Fish II are large party fishing boats that run on a regular schedule of Half Day, Six Hour and All Day trips. The Big Catch is our private charter boat that carries up to six guests for custom fishing trips.
This fun ship with palm trees and live tropical music cruises in Little Sarasota Bay and Roberts Bay for dolphin watches, sightseeing and sunset trips.

The Gulf Coast Wonder and Imagination Zone is a hands-on science center. G.WIZ is a state-of-the-art science and technology center downtown on Sarasota’s beautiful bay front. It offers an array of interactive, hands-on exhibits – a must for the kids!
Myakka is one of Florida's largest and most diverse natural areas. The "Florida Wild and Scenic" Myakka River flows through 45 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands. The river and its two shallow lakes attract a myriad of wetland creatures making birding, canoeing, fishing and wildlife observation popular activities. Ride in the World’s Largest Airboat or hike above the trees on the canopy walkway - Old Florida at its best.
